1. SYDNEY — The Australian dollar is lower against a greenback that has rebounded amid a lack of major economic news. At 0630 AEST on Thursday, the local currency was trading at 73.76 US cents, down from 74.17 cents on Wednesday.

2. SYDNEY — And the local share market looks set to fall after a weak session on Wall Street due to disappointment with earnings reports from the likes of Apple and Microsoft. At 0700 AEST on Thursday, the September share price index futures contract was down two points at 5,550.

3. ATHENS — Thousands of anti-austerity protesters have gathered in Athens as politicians prepare to vote on a second batch of reforms to unlock a huge international bailout.

4. FRANKFURT — The European Central Bank has boosted its cash lifeline for Greece’s struggling banks by 900 million euros ($A1.33 billion), according to Bloomberg News.

5. WASHINGTON — Americans bought homes in June at the fastest rate in over eight years, pushing prices to record highs as buyer demand has eclipsed the availability of houses on the market.


6. WELLINGTON — The Reserve Bank of New Zealand has cut the official cash rate by 25 basis points to 3 per cent.
