One of the star performers on Tuesday was Bidvest [JSE:BVT]. The share price gained 3.12% to R323.79, and is now on its way to the 52-week high of R332.91.
SABMiller [JSE:SAB] also rose by 2.23% to R671.58, but the share is currently trading at a high price to earnings ratio of 28.65.
British American Tobacco [JSE:BTI] traded 1.02% stronger at R683.25 but Richemont [JSE:CFR] and Naspers [JSE:NPN] were only marginally higher. Naspers gained 0.16% to R1 702.74 and Richemont was only 0.11% stronger at R103.22.
The market did not respond positively to the news that Barclays Africa [JSE:BGA] has applied for a licence to operate in Nigeria. Chief executive Maria Ramos also said the banking group is "keen" to take over operations in Egypt and Zimbabwe that still belong to its parent company. The share price dropped 3.55% to R186.55.
